Testimony
MC01At Hiroshima on the night of fifth of August in 1945
There was a great number of shooting stars.
MC02She was born on August 6, 1925.  It was her last night in her teens.
There was a great number of shooting stars.
MC03In Hiroshima before dawn on August 6, 1945
It was so quiet as if every creature were dead.
It was a night with lots of stars twinkling in the sky and a crisp coolness in the air.
Why does she keep following her father around today?  I wondered.
We haven't seen our mice this morning, have we?
She was born in the worst of times.
I will be a substitute for you today.
I left the place and escaped death.
I had just come to the middle of the underpass, when....
MC04It was 15 minutes after 8.
May be there was an explosion at the munitions depot in Hiroshima.
It was as silent as a graveyard.
The atomic bomb cloud looked like a sun with a halo around it.
Rays shimmered like heat haze on the ground.
I can hardly describe what the cloud looked like.
I thought Hiroshima was moaning.
My children had severe burns all over and their skins were hanging off of them.
My friend's face was largely skinned and his torn skin was falling off.
I thought I was dead.
It was a ghost town.
The water of the river blown off from the ground just like a tornado.
People were half naked and rushing to escape one after another.
I didn't recognize any of my students for they looked completely different because of burn blisters.
Don't peel off your skin!  I said.
Oh, my!  It's you, Yotchan! a man in my neighborhood exclaimed.
Who could ever have such a cruel experience?
Crawling on all fours, standing up, tumbling over....
Even now I can't help trembling when I think of that experience.
A naked woman was escaping with a dead baby on her back.
I shouted, "We'll be stranded!"
Leaves were burning on the pine trees.
A baby kept sucking his mother's breast while she was already dead.
A waterspout formed above the river.
Only from the voice I could tell it was a girl.
Thousands of people with severe burn injuries were coming to escape.
It seemed as if the sun covered half of the sky over Hiroshima.
Na-mu-a-mi-da-butsu, they chanted in their Buddhist prayers.
MC05At this hour, at a place of refuge of the Hiroshima branch office of Doumei Tsushin News Agency in the suburb of Hiroshima.
I will write real stories, though they may not be printed in the newspaper.
Still attached eyeballs were dangling about their cheeks.
A baby was covered with blood all over its body.
Both the mother and her newborn baby died on their cart.
A baby was screaming at its mother's breast, not knowing she was dead already.
The surface of the river was covered with the drowning victims.
An all-naked infant was sitting on the rails.
I heard crying  "Help!  Hot!"
High school students were burnt to death.
In the basement, they cried.
He cried out.  "Cut off my foot by saber!"
I'm going to die here.  You run!
I could think about myself only.
I will soon be with you.
Dad, Sadako is here.
I could not do anything.
On every August 6th, I hear my sister's reproachful cry.
Two hundred thousand Doppelgangers were all changed into demons
