Suddenly big rain drops poured down. "It was a napalm bomb!" someone said knowingly. "Don't drink the water!" "Don't drink the water!" The men who seemed to be soldiers kept warning us as they themselves were evacuating.
Along both sides of the road we were passing, the villagers stood with their hands joined in front of them, and chanted Buddhist prayers, saying "Na-mu-a-mi-da-butus. Na-mu-a-mi...." They looked like they were sending us off to another world. To their eyes we must have looked much more pitiful than beggars. We were covered with blood all over. We were wearing tattered shirts which were dyed red with blood. We looked as pale as the dead. We had turned black from head to toe, with only our eyes and teeth gleaming white. The villagers were too horrified to do anything except chant their prayers, I suppose.
