There was a procession of refugees who were completely burned and blackened all over their bodies. Everyone was hairless and had burnt skin coming off and dangling from their arms and their bodies. On their way, there were two rivers. One of the bridges over the rivers was on fire. The refugees were so frightened that they went into the river one after another. They had not gone halfway across the river before they couldn't walk any further and just drowned there. After a while, the wide surface of the Temma River was covered with the drowning victims.
There were water tanks placed on the roadside. A couple of refugees were found leaning on a tank with their heads into the water, and they were dead! Maybe, wanting to have a drink or to splash their faces, they put their hands into the water tank and eventually their heads, only to die. There were many of these standing dead refugees around water tanks here and there, There were foxholes dug on the roadside, too. Refugees often tripped over the holes. Once they fell over, they were never able to get up and move again. Falling on top of one another, persons blackened all over were helplessly looking upward.
