Because of the pain, I came to. It was pitch dark all around. I remembered that I had been walking under the blazing hot sun, but it was very dark then. I was afraid I had died. If I were dead, however, it was strange to think in the same way as if I were still alive. I wondered if men could keep thinking even after their death. Well, I was unable to see anything however hard I tried in the darkness, so I had no choice but to keep lying there with my eyes closed.
The next time I opened my eyes, blue fire sparks were showering down like heavy rain splashes on the road. I had often heard that once you died, you would be received by a demon pulling a fire cart at the gate to the land of the dead. So I was convinced that I was dead. However, what difference did it make if I were dead or alive? I quit thinking about it, and I just watched the blue fire sparks.
But I was still conscious. "Watching this blue light may be bad for the eyes," I thought.
For quite a long time I remained still. When I opened my eyes again, there were no more fires around me, and it was dark like before. "What on earth is going on?" I said to myself. Then I looked up toward the station. The clouds were thinner in the sky. And suddenly it became all bright and....
