A friend of mine said, "You look so different. Are you OK, Yotchan?" "Am I injured, too?" I asked. "You look awful," she said, so I touched my cheek softly with my finger. I felt that it was somewhat stiff, not soft as it always was. And when I saw my finger, a piece of skin was stuck on it. I was sure I was injured. Then I noticed large pieces of skin were dangling down from both of my arms, and I realized that I was seriously injured.
I managed to come back near my house. There I met a man in my neighborhood. He had known me well and had always been nice to me, but he did not recognize me then. When I said hello to him, he was astonished and exclaimed, "Oh, my! It's you, Yotchan!"
Turning the corner, I could see my parents were fussing around. Although I was standing there within their sight, neither of them recognized me. When I threw my arms around my mother, crying, they finally knew I was their daughter Yoshiko. I must have been much transformed.
