The war was over on the next day. I was at a shelter in the suburbs of Hiroshima. When I laid my hand on my head lightly, some hair fell out. Only a wind had my hair fall out easily. I was worried about it and went to the hospital near my house.
A doctor examined me carefully and looked in various kinds of books. He just said, "I can't prove why your hair fell out. Anyway you have to stay in bed for a while." I lied quietly at home that night.
As I looked over my body, I found many red spots all over it. When I pressed and scrubbed those spots, they turned white. When I detached my hand from them, they turned back red. My mother was worried about me, too. One day I overheard my mother and our neighbor were talking. "In Itsukaichi and Kusatsu, many people died after their hair fell out and red spots appeared. If they have a nose bleed, they are undoubtedly finished."
I felt fear more and more in my futon that night. On the next morning I woke up and just when I got out of futon, my nose bled suddenly. I thought finally the time had come.
