When the war ended, people had already been suffering too much to fight. Medicine had run out. People suffered burns all over their bodies. I saw many children cry and scream. Houses were burned and collapsed. The country had already lost actually.
I talked to people that Japan's defeat was sad but the sufferings you were experiencing couldn't go worse.

Translation by another person.
War made us suffer so much. It didn't matter whether we won or lost.
We had not already appeared in public as soliders. We were running out of medicine and everybody had burns all over their bodies. The children were crying out and our residences had been burnt down. This showed the ultimate loss in a war.
I said to the people around me," It's sad to be defeated in war, but we don't have to suffer anymore."
This war made us suffer so much, from burn injuries and death. Because of all this, I felt that it didn't matter whether we won the war or lost.
