I, as a police officer, patrolled the ruins of fires. In the rivers, Shimono-Kawa (river) and Urakami-Kawa (river) at Oohashi (district), many corpses were floating in the same figure as dead fish killed with poison.
I realized that the blast was so powerful when I saw a whole Mosodake-bamboo grove squashed and fell as if it were smoothed down. The bamboo grove had been crushed like a raft.
Every body was stark naked. I could not judge whether their clothes were blown off or burnt. The identification of corpses with clothes was easy, while those without were very hard.
In Yamazato-machi (district), a charred child mounted still on a tricycle. It was a cruel sight. And, because of the blast, a dead fetus protruded from its mother's abdomen.
The most sorry thing was that a baby survived while its mother had been killed. In a such case, even we could not make any arrangements. People often say a word of Hell. Places under Oohashi bridge and in the river were real Hell. It was really a brutal sight which we were not able to look at.
