There were mountains of corpses everywhere. Some people had collapsed face down in the flow of water. Some people had fallen one upon another in a heap on the grass. There were a great many people dying in the Oohashi River or by the river. I thought that they were calling forth all their strength to drink some water by the riverside, then drank some, felt relieved, went to sleep and passed away.
I walked near the road of Shiroyama elementary school. There was a man collapsing beside the fallen roof tiles. He was swollen, bleeding and his eyeballs were popping out. He noticed the sound I made walking, or felt someone coming, "What great pain! Give me some water," he said in a low voice.
When I saw him, I only thought, "Alas! He is still alive." I didn't have any feelings for him other than that. There were many people whose eyeballs were popping out. I still cannot express that terrible disaster into words, even today.
