Being approaching Oohashi (district), we heard a mass of strange voices from the bridge. Thousands of men and women of all ages had evacuated to everywhere, irrespective of river water or dried river bank.
I immediately understood that they had no place to evacuate except the river after all over the surroundings had caught fires in a moment.
During my involvement in the war in North China from 1937 to 1940, I had seen hundreds of dead or wounded Japanese soldiers. I encountered miserable scenes several times. Participants in the war were young men and I myself was prepared for death any time. I simply thought that the next would be my turn.
However, what were these situations? How can groans of thousands of heavily wounded people of all ages and both sexes be described? I have no words to explain the sight.
I had heard of Hell since my childhood. When I was in Chinese battle fields, I did not consider there as Hell. But seeing the scene, I thought that this was a true Hell on earth.
