I was on my duty in the anti-aircraft unit at the top of the mountain. It looked very much different there, that nobody was around. I felt it very strange. It was the afternoon and the sky was blue with clouds afloat. It was beautiful. But it turned dim when I realized.
Imagine how dim and dark it becomes on the mountains piled with snow in midwinter. The place had turned to look as such. All the soldiers in the positions had gone.
When I looked downward from the top of the mountain, the whole town of Urakami was burning quietly. Patches of fire over the town were accurately spaced without any skipped spots. My position was located just above Nagasaki Medical College, so I could see the whole town at the first sight.
I wondered, "When did they drop such a large number of incendiary bombs, before I knew it?" "If the fire spreads all over the town, it would be the sea of flames!" The thought sent chills up my spines. I thought,
"Then all would be lost. It would be the end."
