At 3:30 in the afternoon on that day, the army made a strange announcement. Here is the record, I will read aloud.
"It is 15:30 on August 7. This is Imperial Headquarters' announcement. (The Imperial Headquarters was the supreme organ of Japanese army.)
First, on August 6th, Hiroshima was under attack from a small number of B-29s and considerably damaged.
Second, the enemy seems to have used a new type of bomb. Further details are under investigation."
It was a very simple announcement. At that time, Japanese army regularly invented false information to cover up facts. For example, they announced that an island, which was clearly thought that the American force had already seized, was still a battlefield. They also pretended that the army shifted forward in spite of the fact that they had retreated. They usually told lies to us and deceived us.
This time, however, they announced "a small number of B-29s," "considerably damaged," and "the enemy seems to have used a new type of bomb".
We regarded it as a serious matter. We thought,
"What on earth is a new type of bomb? The enemy must have used an incredible weapon that is hard for us to imagine. Hiroshima must have been entirely destroyed by it."
