"I found my son at last!" a woman exclaimed. "Good for you!" I said to her and then she said "I could tell him by his belly-button."
"Where is he now?" I asked. She showed me something large, wrapped in her furoshiki (wrapping cloth).
"Why? There is no head, no arms, no legs! His torso only?" I asked.
"Oh, yes. He was burned and dismembered. His head, legs and arms were blown away separately. So I left them as they were and brought his torso alone on my back."
Though I believed the belly-button looked so unique to the mother as to tell it belonged to her son, I couldn't help asking.
"How could you tell (it was his)?"
She said, "His belly-button. I could tell him by his belly-button."
I understand anyone would become insane in such circumstances, yet I thought she should have brought his head, and left everything else behind.
