Seeing a Red Cross flag hoisted, lots of injured people came to our first-aid station. Many of them, however, died while getting treated. Some died only giving their names to us. Others died while waiting for their turn in a long line.
A woman with shards of glass stuck all over her body cried, "Give me some water, please." I was very sorry for her and gave her a bit of water. Soon water bubbles came out of every wound on her, and she died soon after.
There was a man whose watch face was imprinted onto his arm.
Talking about officers, I found one almost naked with his saber hanging at his side. His clothing was all burned up. Many officers were carried on their soldiers' shoulders. Often many of the soldiers were more severely injured than their officers.
I said to them, "Put down your officer and get yourself treated first."
But they said, "Oh, please treat my officer first." Many such soldiers died
